Base malt for brewing beer

The base malt normally makes up the bulk of the malt bill and provides the enzymes and fermentable sugar upon which the beer is built. Here you will find, among others, pilsner malt, pale ale malt, Vienna and Munich malt for both pale and darker beer styles.

Select below whether you want to buy the malt weighed per kg or as whole sacks. Weighed malt can be ordered in the quantity you need, while whole sacks are suitable for larger brews and frequent brewing.

How to choose base malt

Pilsner malt gives a light and clean malt profile and is often used for pilsners, lagers and Belgian beers. Pale ale malt has a slightly fuller and bready character, whereas Vienna and Munich malts contribute more colour and a more distinct malt flavour. Check the malt's EBC value on the product when you want to compare colour and character.

To add caramel sweetness or more colour, the base malt can be combined with CARA and crystal malt or roasted malt and chocolate malt.
