PGA powder for a more stable beer head

PGA is propylene glycol alginate, a food-grade substance produced from alginic acid derived from brown algae. It is used as a foam stabiliser in beer and cider.

PGA can improve foam stability and adhesion to the glass. The product is added to the finished beer after any filtration and should not be added at the same time as other processing aids.

Preparation of a 2 % solution

  1. Boil the required amount of water and cool it to 30–40 °C.
  2. Add 2 grams of PGA powder per 100 ml of water.
  3. Stir vigorously until the solution is uniform. A magnetic stirrer or other effective agitation is recommended.
  4. Filter the solution before use.

Dosage

Bridge 50–125 ml of the 2 % solution per 25 litres of beer. That corresponds to 1–2.5 grams of PGA powder per 25 litres.

Add the solution to the finished beer immediately before bottling or kegging. Do not exceed the recommended dosage.

A 30-gram pack is enough for approximately 300–750 litres of beer, depending on the dosage.

An unused solution should be stored in a cold place and used within 14 days.
